Miranda Newman is a bestselling author.

Her debut memoir-in-essays, ROUGH MAGIC, a collection about living with borderline personality disorder, was published by McClelland & Stewart in April 2024. ROUGH MAGIC won a 2025 Silver Nautilus Award and was a finalist for the 2025 Balcones Prize for Nonfiction.

Miranda’s work has appeared in The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, Broadview Magazine, The Walrus, and more. Her story, “Kids in Crisis,” received an honourable mention from the National Magazine Awards. She previously published Life as a Lunatic, a newsletter about coping with mental illness.

Miranda holds a bachelor of journalism from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly, Ryerson University). From 2021 to 2022, she was a Fellow at Yale University’s Program for Recovery and Community Health.

She serves as a mentor for writers with lived experience with the support of Yale University and The Writers’ Union of Canada. In addition to her writing experience, Miranda is a trained peer supporter working with organizations like Workman Arts.
